bio
I have always worked with images: stills (photographic and more recently, digitally manipulated), films, color pencil drawings, video.
Under my former name, Diane Rochlin, I co-directed and co-edited "Vali: The Witch of Positano", a documentary about an Australian artist-shaman living in Italy that won the social documentary award at the Mannheim International Festival in 1966. (The film is currently distributed through Mystic Fire Video.) Subsequently, I worked as a freelance cinematographer in New York City, specializing in filming avant-garde theatrical productions, including Ira Cohen's recently re-released seminal work "The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda" (currently distributed on DVD by "arthurmagazine").
Moving into video with the new Sony Portapak via a grant from the American Film Institute in 1969, I collaborated on videotaping The Living Theater's historic final performance of "Paradise Now" at the Sportspalast in Berlin. In 1970 I traveled to India where I videotaped spiritual leaders and their communities, including the famous expatriate Auroville commune at Pondicherry.
My most important social documentary was "Dope", a feature-length 16mm film (in collaboration with the late Sheldon Rochlin) on the London drug scene, which premiered in 1975 in the First New American Cinema Series at the Whitney Museum. The film was shown at the First Provincetown Film Festival in 1999.
Since 1989, I have lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico where I create video and digital art.
